Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Bevington, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Bevington which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
