Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Bode, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Bode that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
