Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Clarion, IA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Clarion which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
