Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Dallas Center, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Dallas Center which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
