One of the outpatient rehabilitation options for clients in Delta who are battling with opioid abuse and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Some clinics and doctors are authorized to administer specific medications to opioid addicted people, many that are opioid-based themselves and are addictive. With low amounts however, the user does not experience being high and also doesn't have intense cravings and isn't in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first med used for this reason, but there are alternative options to select from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an outpatient medical center certified to administer the drug, that is taken daily as a pill or liquid. The cost of the med is around $150 per month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based drug, and is a pill often taken every other day. But different from Methadone that can only be administered in highly structured medical centers, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The price monthly of buprenorphine is about three hundred dollars a month for the generic version of the medication. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a drug that blocks the effects of opiates. A person taking this version of the drug, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken daily, and costs around $450 monthly. Naltrexone is an additional medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned it's an opioid blocker and is not an opiate. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents a person from experience high feelings from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 a month.
