Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Eagle Grove, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Eagle Grove that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
