Clients referred from the court for substance abuse treatment are most commonly referred because they are being given a chance to receive treatment in lieu of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is more prevalent with first time offenders, it can occur at any time including while the person is being held in jail. There are various types of programs that criminal justice clients may be referred to, and it usually all depends on what is local to Early and the type of substance the person requires treatment for.
There are programs that work directly with the criminal justice court system to treat this explicit group of clientele, and are typically publicly-funded or are available at no cost or very little cost to the client. Additionally, there are also private substance abuse rehabilitation centers that can be accepted by the court if there is a specific type of treatment that the client needs or prefers that a different program can't fulfill. The client's legal representation can present such alternatives to the judge for permission. There are even drug and alcohol rehab facilities that operate out of the jails and prisons themselves, whereas clients are sometimes in a better position for early release or other benefits when engaging in substance abuse rehab services while serving their sentence for a drug offense or a DUI/DWI.
