Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Fort Atkinson, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Fort Atkinson which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
