Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Garber, IA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Garber which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
