Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Hansell, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Hansell which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
