Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Houghton, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Houghton that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
