Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Luzerne, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Luzerne which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
