Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - New Hartford, IA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in New Hartford which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
