Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Packwood, IA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Packwood that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
