Clients referred from the court for substance abuse rehabilitation are most commonly referred because they are being granted a chance to accept rehab instead of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. Although this is more prevalent among first time offenders, it can happen at any time such as while someone is already incarcerated. There are different types of programs that criminal justice clients may be referred to, and it usually all depends on which programs are attainable in Peru and the type of drug or alcohol the person requires treatment for.
