Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Peru, IA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Peru that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
