Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Red Oak, IA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Red Oak which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
