Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - St. Paul, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in St. Paul that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
