Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Truro, IA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Truro which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
