Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Walnut, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Walnut that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
