Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Waukee, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Waukee which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
