Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Whiting, IA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Whiting which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
