Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Bellevue, ID.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Bellevue that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
