Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Fernan Lake Village, ID.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Fernan Lake Village which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
