Clients referred from the court for substance abuse treatment are typically referred because they are being given a chance to accept treatment rather than face jail time, other charges, fines, etc. Although this is most common among first time offenders, it can be offered at any point including while the person is being held in jail. There are different types of programs that criminal justice clients can be referred to, and it usually depends on which programs are local to Grace and the type of substance they'll need treatment for.
There are programs that work directly with the courts to administer to this specific type of clientele, and are usually state funded or are available at no cost or very little cost to the client. There are also private drug treatment facilities that may be accepted by the court if there is a specific type of treatment that the client needs or wants that a different program can't fulfill. The client's legal representation can request such alternatives to the judge for permission. There are even drug rehab centers that operate out of the jails and prisons themselves, where clients are often in a better position for reduced sentences or other leniencies when enrolling in substance abuse rehab services while serving their time for a drug related offense or a DUI/DWI.
