Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Lewisville, ID.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Lewisville that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
