Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Lowman, ID.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Lowman which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
