Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Weiser, ID.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Weiser which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
