Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Albany, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Albany that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
