Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Arlington, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Arlington which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
