Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Atlanta, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Atlanta which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
