Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Bismarck, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Bismarck which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
