Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Cherry, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Cherry which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
