Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Colp, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Colp which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
