Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Dewitt, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Dewitt which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
