Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Dundas, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Dundas that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
