Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Edwards, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Edwards which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
