Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Elgin, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Elgin that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
