Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Esmond, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Esmond which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
