Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Fairfield, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Fairfield that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
