Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Girard, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Girard which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
