Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Hurst, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Hurst which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
