Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Long Point, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Long Point that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
