Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Manteno, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Manteno which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
