Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Maunie, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Maunie which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
