Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Midlothian, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Midlothian that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
