Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Montgomery, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Montgomery that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
