Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Mt Zion, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Mt Zion that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
