Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - New Salem, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in New Salem that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
