Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Palatine, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Palatine that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
